Friday Frills

There Are No Squares In Nature...

Thinking about it, when have you ever seen the following?
A square leaf

A square fruit

A square tree

A square raindrop

Coming to think of it, nature, unlike man, does not produce
Square moons

Square suns

Square planets

Or square galaxies

 There are no square rainbows

Nor square flowers

Nor square minds
That could fit inside a square box

Yet more often than not, that’s exactly what we do.
We try to put everything inside a box

We try to make all things black and white

Trying to fit a square peg into a round hole,
Attempting to conform to a standard of modern convention

Since the dawn of man-made technology,

We have certainly lived in a world of squares:
Square houses

Square buildings

Square computer screens

We write on square papers set upon square tables.

We sleep on square beds and enter upon square doors.
 What has this shown us?

You shouldn't try to fit into something square,
You are meant to shape your own life, your own way.

The next time someone tries to place your creative soul inside a small box.

Kindly remind yourself: There are no square stars in the Universe.

  5. Great post- it reminds me of my son and my puppy, who see the baby gate resting on the stairwell, and do not even think to push it over, something they both are more than strong enough to do. Instead they both stand there-helpless - baby crying, dog barking for us to move it so they can get past it. If we all just stopped putting ourselves into the proverbial box, we would probably be able to get ourselves over to the other side!

  7. Oooh, this is a lovely post, Sam! And I really like these words. The yellow against the navy (black?) is stunning in these pictures. It's amazing how we as humans can really simplify nature into something so geometric.

  22. I am obsessed with the yellow color, so you can only imagine how my eyes went when I saw the photo you chose! But what really caught my eye is the poem- every line made sense, and every line got a affirmative nod from me. It's so true, and so wise. Thank you so much for sharing it with us, it definitely gave me something to reflect on.

Have a magical Friday and weekend!

  24. Wow, its Friday already! this week just flew by!
I quite love the image, it's so striking with the black, white and yellow. The inspirational quote is inspiring as always, although I think he maybe should have done a little homework, there's more than a few rocks and crystals that form as cubes. (But that doesn't really sound very cool, "be a square like a rock! Sit there for millions of years!" Not quite as inspiring.) Happy Friday dear, I hope you get to enjoy your weekend! :)

  29. Morning Sam! You know, the friday frills posts are my fav of the week:) You always share the most thoughtful words, as today, those words are just what I need to read:) Thats so true, in nature there isnt anything square, it is man who try to shape everything with the same figure. I really hate when someone try to convince myself to think as others just cause is supposed to be the best mentality or cause society wants us to be in that way. We all are different from ech other, with our mind and life, unique and unrepeatable. We have to not let others dull our inside star to make it more square!:) Happy friday dear, big hugs!!♥

  31. Internet playing games with me here, on and off, I couldn't be fully back to the blogosphere! Seems it' solved now, hopefully! I always told you I love your Friday Frills! I wrote down yesterday some words I heard one of these days, and they were "the only one who puts limits to your life is yourself" - isn't it the same as putting life into a box? You are brilliant, I loved these words now! Hope you have a great weekend!

  39. I have been thinking about the concept of "fitting in" a lot. Especially during high school, but also now, there are so many people who think they have the 'power' to put people into boxes and even define how these boxes must look like. I must admit I suffered a lot from this. Can't say that I was bullied, but I was constantly reminded that I, in fact, did not fit in. As a teenager that's really hard to accept. On the other hand, being as stubborn as I am, it made me stronger and I don't think I would ever give in because of some boxes someone else defined. As the text above says, "You are meant to shape your own life, your own way". And when I think about my life, it's definitely not some little box.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Your blog is so inspirational in so many different ways!
